Important information about Jantar Mantar
History about the Jantar Mantar - this observatory
(Jantar Mantar) was built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh of Jaipur, when he is
governor of Malwa during the reign of Emperor Muhammad Shah of Delhi. He got
Jantar Mantar constructed in 1711 AD.
Maharaja Jaisingh was a good fighter, politician and
administrator. He was also especially a scholar. Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh
composed the astrological texts.
Timurlang's grandson Mirza Uluk Beg, who was a master of
astrology, had built an observatory in Samarkand. King Jaisingh built
observatories in Ujjain, Jaipur, Delhi, Mathura and Varanasi in India by the
order of Emperor Muhammad Shah.
In these observatories, Raja Jaisingh got new instruments
made with his ability, and at the local observatory, he himself made amendments
to many major instruments of astrological mathematics by taking observations of
planets and constellations for about 8 years.
Thereafter, this observatory remained neglected for two
centuries. Siddhantvagish Late Narayan Vyas and Ganak Churnmani, Late Shri Go.
S. Apte was the first superintendent of the observatory. According to his
proposal, late Maharaja Madhavrao Scindia made financial arrangements for the
use of the observatory by reviving it in 1923. Since then this observatory is
working continuously.
The four instruments on the observatory are Samrat, Nadivalaya, Digansh and Bhitti, built by Maharaja Jai Singh. Shanku Yantra is made under the direction of Apte Sir. The Digansh Yantra was rebuilt in the year 1974 and the Shanku Yantra was rebuilt in the year 1982. In 1983, marble information boards giving information about instruments were installed in Hindi and English.
Fee for entry to Jantar Mantar
A fee is charged for entry to Jantar Mantar. Here 10 rupees
per person are charged for the Indian
tourist. Here Rs 5 is charged for student and Rs 100 for foreigner person.
Here the fee for planetarium is 20 rupees per person and 10
rupees for student and if you use telescope, it is 20 rupees for that. but you
can read books here free.
Opening hours of Jantar Mantar
The opening hours of the observatory are from 10:30 am to
5:30 pm. You can come here after 10:30 am and roam comfortably and get
information.
